An Explorer Tries to Escape a Rain of Fire in an Exclusive Clip for ‘A Vanishing Fog’

A solitary explorer and guardian of the mountains (Sebastian Pii) faces a reign of violence across his land in Colombian filmmaker Augusto Sandino’s A Vanishing Fog. The film had its world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival before screening at SXSW, where it won the Cinematography Award for its hypnotic visuals. Sandino’s dreamlike second feature follows a mountain guard (Pii) living in Sumapaz Paramo with his ailing father (Mario de Jesús Viana). As his native land comes under the threat of military violence, he experiences surreal visions that make him yearn for an otherworldly escape. It will roll out at Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles starting April 23 before expanding, and we’re pleased to debut an exclusive clip.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In the middle of the surreal and endangered Sumapaz Paramo ecosystem; a solitary explorer strives to protect the mystical and fragile land he inhabits. He’s prepared for his escape, but before pursuing a new dimension he will have to endure a heartrending farewell.
“Augusto Sandino’s incredible blend of playful surrealism and the overwhelming individuality of the environment in which the film is set has stayed with me since my first viewing. I believe his ability to balance visual scale, cinematic playfulness, and true heart make him an artist we should be engaging with frequently,” said Hope Runs High curator Taylor Purdee.
