GRAND TOUR Trailer: Miguel Gomes’ Cannes-Winning Odyssey Arrives in March

Miguel Gomes, the Portuguese filmmaker behind Tabu, Arabian Nights, and The Tsugua Diaries, is back with a black-and-white-shot odyssey that toggles eras, cultures, and styles. Grand Tour, billed by MUBI as a “melodrama and screwball comedy with a cat-and-mouse chase between lovers,” follows a woman (Crista Alfaiate) in 1917 Burma who sets off to find her runaway fiancée (Gonçalo Waddington) on a journey that takes her across Asia.
It premiered at Cannes last year where Gomes picked up the Best Director prize, before making stops at NYFF and TIFF. It was also Portugal’s Best International Feature entry to the 97th Academy Awards. Gomes co-wrote the film with Mariana Ricardo, Telmo Churro, and Maureen Fazendeiro. MUBI has now set it to roll out in theaters March 28, before streaming on its platform April 18.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Rangoon, Burma, 1917. Edward, a civil servant for the British Empire, runs away from his fiancée, Molly, the day she arrives to get married. During his travels, however, panic gives way to melancholy. Yet Molly, determined to marry and amused by his move, follows his trail on this Asian grand tour.
