RUMOURS Red Band Trailer: Cate Blanchett Tries to Survive an Otherworldly G7 Summit in Political Satire

It’s not every day you’d witness world leaders encounter a giant brain and muddy zombies in a deep, dark forest. But that’s just the surface of what directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson have conceived in their political satire, Rumours. The trio’s first feature since 2015’s The Forbidden Room follows a group of leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies attending the G7 summit who get lost in the woods while drafting a statement on a global crisis – facing otherworldly danger as they attempt to find their way out. Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander star alongside Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Zlatko Burić, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Roy Dupuis, Takehiro Hira, and Rolando Ravello.

Rumours premiered at this year’s Cannes and is an official selection of TIFF and NYFF. Blanchett also serves as an executive producer alongside Ari Aster. Ahead of its October 18 theatrical release, an official red band trailer has arrived courtesy of Bleecker Street.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Ricocheting between comedy, apocalyptic horror, and swooning soap opera, Rumours follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis. With unexpected, uproarious performances from a brilliant ensemble cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and Charles Dance, these so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence, contending with increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and they realize they are suddenly alone. A genre-hopping satire of political ineptitude, the latest film from incomparable directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson is a journey into the absurd heart of power and institutional failure in a slowly burning world.
