THE SMASHING MACHINE Trailer: Dwayne Johnson Stars in Benny Safdie’s MMA Biopic

Six years after making Uncut Gems, the Safdie Brothers have forged their individual paths as filmmakers. Both brothers have their solo projects coming out this year from A24. With Josh’s Timothee Chalemet-starrer Marty Supreme set for a Christmas Day release, Benny (fresh off creating the Showtime miniseries The Curse with Nathan Fielder) dives into the world of UFC in his gritty biopic set to arrive this fall.
Benny writes and directs The Smashing Machine, which stars a near-unrecognizable Dwayne Johnson as controversial MMA legend Mark Kerr. The film follows Kerr’s life and career as he rises in the UFC while struggling with substance abuse and his rocky marriage with Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt). Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, Oleksandr Usyk, and Satoshi Ishii co-star. Benny Safdie also produces alongside Johnson and is a co-editor with longtime collaborator Ronald Bronstein.
A24 will release the gritty biopic in theaters October 3. Check out the trailer and poster below.
